Interesting fact: Many well-meaning men today have unfortunately cast doubt upon the scriptural nature and necessity of Bible teaching. In fact, most of the emerging churches emphasize sharing the word in a short Sunday homily rather than mentoring and discipling believers beyond a superficial level. However, the overriding emphasis of the ministry of Christ was not focused upon preaching but rather teaching. In fact, most of Christ’s earthly titles pointed to His office as teacher. These include Master (Matthew 10:24-25), Rabbi(John 1:38; John 3:2), and Rabboni(John 20:16) .

Bible study tip: As languages change, the meanings of words likewise change. This is especially true for works that have existed for several centuries like the Bible. In order to properly understand the Bible words, it is best to consider the biblical usage of the word. The word scholar is a prime example. The context most commonly used today refers to someone who has mastered a particular subject. Unfortunately, this usage does not align with the biblical usage. The Bible refers to a scholar as one who is a student (1 Chronicles 25:8; Malachi 2:12). As we learn scriptural truths, we should implement them into our speech. For example, we should never refer to someone who fails to uphold the ultimate authority of the scriptures as a Bible scholar simply because he is highly educated or esteemed by the world.

Day 239: Church Day

Psalm 25:4Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.

5Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

8 Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way.

9 The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.

12 What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.
