The Home—This study focuses on the hierarchy and relationships of the husband, his wife, and their children.
Interesting fact: On the surface, it might appear that the marriage relationship was created for man. After all, the Lord said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18). Paul further testified, “For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man” (1 Corinthians 11:8-9). This seems further confirmed when we consider the initial creation of the woman out of man and her subsequent presentation to the man (Genesis 2:18-22; Mark 10:6-9). It seems obvious that the primary impetus behind the institution and formation of the marriage relationship was for man and for his benefit. However, it is important to consider that everything created has a higher purpose. Revelation 4:11 states, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Marriage, like every other thing created, was instituted to bring pleasure to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Bible study tip: Repetition used in scripture serves to teach and emphasize important truths. The repetition can be obvious and impossible to miss but not always. For instance, the Bible will, at times, use repetition as bookends to a chapter or a verse. By opening and closing a passage with repetition, the student’s attention is directed upon a singular subject. Psalm 113 offers a fine example. It opens and closes with the phrase “Praise ye the LORD” (Psalm 113:1, 9).
