Giving—found 2,046 times in 1,856 verses. This study will concentrate specifically on giving financially to the Lord.

Variations: gave, gavest, give, given, giver, givest, giveth, giving

Defined: To give indicates the transfer of some possession to another.

Interesting fact: The early church was distinguished in its sacrificial giving. Some sold houses and lands and laid the money at the apostles’ feet for the distribution to the saints (Acts 4:34-35). Some, though in “deep poverty,” “gave their own selves to the Lord” (2 Corinthians 8:1-5). Of the Galatians Paul said, “if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me” (Galatians 4:15). Every Christian should consider their level of sacrifice!

Bible study tip: The Bible points to biblical revelation as a gradual process. Therefore, it is both unscriptural and unwise to assume that Old Testament saints understood truths later revealed to the New Testament writers. It is equally unwise to assume that everything God intended under the Law remains binding today. Always test the Old Testament practices against the New Testament teachings before suggesting their continuance.
