Temptation—found seventy-three times in sixty-four verses

Variations: tempt, temptation, temptations, tempted, tempter, tempteth, tempting

First usage: Genesis 22:1 (tempt)

Last usage: Revelation 3:10 (temptation)

Defined: a time of trial or testing

Interesting fact: James 1:13 contains the words tempted or tempteth four times. 1 Corinthians 10:13 contains the words temptation or tempted three times. These two verses alone offer a vast doctrinal treatise on the source of, commonality of, and help available during times of temptation.

Bible study tip: At times, the Lord uses figures of speech to reinforce an associated truth. For example, Paul desired that those requiring “circumcision” of the believers of Galatia (Galatians 5:2, 11) would be “cut off” (Galatians 5:12). In the same chapter, Paul expressed fear that the people would “bite and devour one another,” and in doing so, they might consume one another (Galatians 5:15).
