Interesting fact: Though the details of the New Testament began with the first words of the gospel of Matthew, the New Testament was of no force until the death of the testator—Jesus Christ (Hebrews 9:16-17). Yet, when Jesus died, He did so for the redemption of all transgressions including those that were under the first testament (Hebrews 9:15). Legally, men who knew the Lord had to go to the holding place called Abraham’s bosom (Luke 16:22), or paradise (Luke 23:43), until after the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. At that point, paradise was delivered into the presence of the Father in the third heaven (2 Corinthians 12:4). During this resurrection, the Bible says that many of the saints appeared in Jerusalem.
Bible study tip: It is not always easy to identify those who knew the Lord in the Old Testament. However, there are various phrases that help to determine the truth of the matter. For instance, Hebrews chapter 11 chronicles the life of faithful Old Testament saints, but one phrase in particular stands out—“These all died in faith” (Hebrews 11:13). It is also likely that some hint exists in the various phrases closely associated with a man being “gathered unto his people” at his death (Numbers 20:24). This took place “until Shiloh” came, and the Bible says that unto Him was “the gathering of the people” (Genesis 49:10).
