Modesty—specifically mentioned only once in scripture although the concept is alluded to with much greater frequency
Variations: modest
First and only usage: 1 Timothy 2:9
Defined: appropriate or within moderation; this study approaches the subject as it relates to clothing
Interesting fact: Beginning with the garden in Eden, reconciliation to God has always modified a person’s apparel (Genesis 3:21). It was no different during the Lord’s earthly ministry (Luke 8:35). It should be no different today.
Bible study tip:The best way to study and teach the scripture is to do so line upon line or in an expository manner. Word-by-word, verse-by-verse, and chapter-by-chapter is the safest and most effective way to insure that one declares “all the counsel of God” (Acts 20:27). Sometimes, a topical study helps to develop a particular subject in greater depth and detail. However, we must be very careful in a topical study not to make the scripture say what we want it to say by ignoring the greater context merely to fit our preconceived ideas concerning a topic.
