Appearance—found in all its various forms 180 times in 159 verses, but the focus of this study emphasizes mankind’s outward appearance
Variations: appear, appearance, appearances, appeared, appeareth, appearing
Definition: the way someone or something looks
Interesting fact: The Bible clearly states that “man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Pointing to this truth, some have used it to claim that God takes no thought of man’s outward appearance. Yet, the Holy Ghost, the narrator of scripture, testified in the book of Proverbs of “a woman with the attire of an harlot” (Proverbs 7:10). Obviously, God looks upon the heart for the truth about all of us but also takes note and cares about man’s outward appearance.
Bible study tip: Within the pages of scripture, modern family relationship identifications are not always chronicled by their most familiar forms. For example, the words grandfather, grandson, granddaughter, and grandchild are not found at all within God’s word while the word grandmother is found only one time (2 Timothy 1:5). As such, the word son can be used to denote a father-son relationship, but also to specify a more distant family relationship (Luke 20:41-44).
