Edification—found twenty times in nineteen verses
Variations: edification, edified, edifieth, edify, edifying
First usage: Acts 9:31 (edified)
Last usage: 1 Timothy 1:4 (edifying)
Defined: related to the word edifice and means to build up or construct
Interesting fact: Seven of the twenty appearances of edification are found in 1 Corinthians chapter 14. The emphasis of this chapter upon edifying proves the church’s preeminent responsibility. Believers and churches that fail to display charity and refuse to edify others fall short of God’s explicit directives.
Bible study tip: It has been said that repetition is the key to learning, but repetition serves several purposes. The Bible uses repetition to slow the reader down so that he might concentrate on each part of a verse or passage. For instance, Acts 1:8 serves as an example of how the Lord repeats the word and four times. Look it up and take note of the pattern.
