Liberality—found ten times in eight verses
Variations: liberal, liberality, liberally
First usage: Deuteronomy 15:14 (liberally)
Last usage: James 1:5 (liberally)
Defined: something done in an unrestricted manner
Interesting fact: The biblical mentions of liberality involve taking of one’s possessions or monies and distributing them to others who are in a specific time of need (Deuteronomy 15:14; 1 Corinthians 16:3; 2 Corinthians 8:2; 2 Corinthians 9:13). Societies have become increasingly enamored by those who claim to take from the rich and give to the poor. However, liberality is never defined as one man taking another’s possessions and monies in order to assist others who might have unmet needs. Furthermore, it is completely unscriptural to give (including even the basic necessities of life) to those who refuse to work (2 Thessalonians 3:10).
Bible study tip: The more we depart from daily Bible reading, the more we veer away from understanding and implementing sound biblical terminology. The consequences of this departure from biblical terminology are twofold: (1) we improperly identify people (i.e., liberals, scholars, sodomites) and acts, and (2) we then tend to interpret scripture based upon our flawed understanding of Bible vocabulary. With this in mind, we should never underestimate the influence of daily Bible reading upon in-depth Bible study.
