Life—This study is not focused upon any specific word or phrase but rather intended to shed light on the importance of or value of a man’s life.

Interesting fact: The Lord told Jeremiah, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). Even those greatly used by the Lord have times of heightened despair. In the midst of a time of adversity, Jeremiah languished, “Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave” (Jeremiah 20:17). Yet, the Bible shows that Jeremiah was greatly used of the Lord in a time of desperate need in his native country. In fact, he was likely very influential in the life and success of one of the greatest kings to ever live—Josiah (2 Chronicles 35:25).

Bible study tip: The word cubit(s) is found 258 times in the Bible. It is thought to be the distance from the elbow to the tip of the longest finger. This distance can obviously vary depending upon the size of the person measuring but is typically thought to be anywhere from eighteen to twenty-two inches. Another term used to describe the length of something is the word handbreadth. This term is only found three times in the Bible and describes the length from the edge of the thumb to the edge of the pinky finger when spread out fully. God used these and other measurements to allow man to use his God-given resources to build, measure, and labour.
