Vengeance—found 106 times in ninety-two verses
Variations: avenge, avenged, avenger, avengeth, revenge, revenged, revenger, revengers, revenges, revengeth, vengeance
Defined: to lay claim to or to punish
First usage: Genesis 4:15 (vengeance)
Last usage: Revelation 19:2 (avenged)
Interesting fact: Nowhere in the scriptures is the New Testament believer admonished to take vengeance into his own hands as it pertains to the wrong doings of others. Yet, Christians are twice admonished to or praised for “revenge” on our own disobedience (2 Corinthians 7:11; 2 Corinthians 10:6).
Bible study tip: Watch for the use of the words as and so within a common passage. Oftentimes, the word as establishes the pattern and the word so presents the parallel. For example, Deuteronomy 8:5 – “as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.” The pattern refers to how a man chastens his son which establishes the parallel to how the Lord chastens His children.
