Self-examination—This concept is found throughout scripture under a variety of words and phrases.
Variations: consider, examine, meditate, remember, think, etc.
Defined: personal reflection or the study of oneself for the sake of improvement
Interesting fact: One of the purposes of man’s spirit serves to act as a candle lighting the inner being of man (Proverbs 20:27). It demonstrates to man the true nature of the heart (Psalm 4:4; Psalm 77:6).
Bible study tip: Take the time to consider why the Lord, who is omniscient, ever asks man a question. According to John 6:5-6, Jesus asked Philip a question in order to prove Philip for the Lord “knew what he would do.” With this in mind, consider other passages where the Lord asked man questions including the first man Adam (Genesis 3:9-13). What might be God’s purpose in asking questions of man?
